Guy Miller Tree Plantings (All ages with parents)
THPRD works with the community to improve natural areas, gardens and trails throughout the district. Activities are focused on planting native trees and shrubs throughout district natural areas and removing invasive species, such as Himalayan blackberry and English ivy. Planting season at THPRD starts each October and continues through mid-March. Check out upcoming opportunties and sign up a group or an individual today!
Environmental Education Events (Ages 14+)
Scouts can put their knowledge to good use by volunteering at a Nature Education Event. These events engage and entertain the public on topics including wildlife, bugs, seasonal changes, native versus non-native plants, and more. Annual events include:
Friends of Tualatin Hills Nature Park Native Plant Sales, in April & October
Scouts are welcome to volunteer for any number of community celebrations throughout the year, from summer concerts to holiday events at our recreation centers. These events are often free to the public, providing fun and exciting activities for the whole family. Check out and sign up for upcoming community celebrations today!
Park, Trail & Garden Adoption
If your scout group would like to get involved in a long-term stewardship project at a district park, trail or garden, this is the program for you! This program is adaptable to meet your needs, as well as those of the adoption site. Activities could include stream or litter clean-up, non-native vegetation removal, trail maintenance, native plant installation, wildlife surveys, and more. Eagle Scout & Gold, Silver or Bronze Award Projects
If you are looking to complete an Eagle Scout or a Gold, Silver or Bronze Award project with THPRD, please select one or more projects from the list below and complete this volunteer application to get started. Once your volunteer application has been processed, a THPRD staff person will reach out to schedule an initial meeting with you.
Current list of available projects with THPRD:
Design and construct portable stanchions that can be used to manage lines for various stations at free public events. The design must allow for efficient storage between use and be light enough for one person to move.
Garden plot borders - Install plot borders for community garden plots at John Marty Park, Kennedy Community Garden, Southminster Community Garden. This may require removing delapidated plot borders and/or delineating plots that have never had a border.
Garden plot markers - Design and install plot markers for community garden plots at AM Kennedy Park, Barsotti Park, Jackie Husen Park, Ridgewood Park, and Welch-Centennial Community Garden.
Pollinator Habitat Structure - Design, build and install a pollinator habitat structure at John Marty Community Garden.
Make free family fun kits - Design and make 300 - 500 blank journals that can be given away to youth at free events and programs.
Make volunteer recognition items - Design and make items that can be used for volunteer recognition. Some items that scouts have previously made include mason bee houses, coasters, bat houses and bookmarks. We currently need mason bee houses and possibly bat houses.
Improve a THPRD natural area - These projects require scouts to remove one or more invasive plants and plant designated areas with native trees and shrubs.
