THPRD Swim Academy
Level 1: The main focus is submersion and breath control working on independent floating, gliding, and kicking on front and back. Upon successful completion, swimmers will be able to kick while using a kickboard, float on their front and back, steamboat and back glide for two body lengths and jump into the water, all unassisted.
Level 2: The main focus is working on productive, propulsive arm strokes and effective kicks on front and back. Upon successful completion, the swimmer will be able to coordinate side breathing with arm strokes on a kickboard, swim five body lengths on their back doing winging and kicking, and jump into the water, then swim to the wall unassisted.
Level 3: The main focus is crawl stroke proficiency, the introduction of new back skills, and orientating to deeper water. Upon successful completion, they will be able to catch 5 breaths doing crawl stroke, roll on their back, then swim winging and kicking on their back for a total of 15 yards.
Level 4: The main focus is continued stroke development on crawl stroke and backstroke, getting ready for more advanced strokes, and starting the diving progression with sitting and kneeling dives. Upon successful completion, swimmers will be able to swim crawl stroke and backstroke for 15 yards and pass the swim test.
Level 5: The main focus is increasing stroke proficiency and endurance, learning breaststroke, and continuing the diving progression with standing dives. Upon successful completion, swimmers will be able to swim 50 yards crawl stroke, 50 yards backstroke, and 25 yards of breaststroke with proper timing and technique.
Level 6: The main focus is continued stroke proficiency and endurance, learning butterfly, and finishing the diving progression with long, shallow dives. Upon successful completion, swimmers will be able to swim continuously for 300 yards, tread water for two minutes, and demonstrate underwater swimming.
The prerequisite for each level is completing all skills in the previous level confidently, consistently, and comfortably. There is no prerequisite for Level 1.
Advanced Swimming
Once a child has completed all six Learn to Swim levels, there are many additional opportunities available to help them continue to develop their water skills.
Level 7: The main focus is stroke refinement, preparation for competitive aquatic sports like swim team, diving, water polo, and synchronized swimming, and preparation for lifeguarding. Upon successful completion, they will have completed a 500-yard continuous swim, tried skills from all of the competitive aquatic sports, and learned some basic water safety skills.
Additional steps could include:
• Water polo classes
• Diving lessons
• Splash (recreational swim team)
• Competitive club programs (swimming, water polo, synchronized swimming, diving)
• Junior Lifeguarding (ages 12-15)
Parent and Child Aquatics
Parent Participation - Baby & Me (6 months-24 months)
A fun introduction to the water for parent and child, with songs, water toys and the introduction of a few basic skills. Swim diapers required.
Parent Participation - Toddler & Me (18 months-3 years)
A continuation of skills learned in Baby & Me, this class is recommended before beginning our preschool swim lesson program. Swim diapers are required for all children who are not toilet trained.
Parent Participation - You & Your Preschooler (3-5 years)
This class is for children not quite ready to begin lessons without a parent. It includes basic swim skills and learning to become comfortable in the water.
Blended Levels
In order to serve our guests effectively, some classes may be "blended" to include students from multiple class levels. When more than one instructor is available, students will be assessed on the first day and then grouped by ability.
In blended classes instructors will work on individual skills at the appropriate level for each student; we strive to individualize learning based on stroke progression. For example, some students might be working on crawl stroke while other students work on combining arm strokes with an introduction to side breathing.
Adaptive Aquatics
Adaptive swim lessons are designed for individuals 3 years and older with developmental, cognitive, and physical disabilities. They are one-on-one so that classes can be personalized for the needs of each participant. Participants will need to:
Complete the required Medical Emergency Information form
Complete the Program Intake form
Enroll online or at a facility.
Adaptive Aquatic lessons are available at the Beaverton and Harman Swim Centers.
