Project Summary & Public Benefits
Whispering Woods is an important natural area as the location of the confluence of two of the major creek systems and floodplains in Beaverton, Willow Creek and Beaverton Creek. After the confluence, Beaverton Creek continues west before it empties into Rock Creek, which in turn combines to form the Tualatin River.
Whispering Woods consists of both upland, forested habitat and a creek floodplain. The wetter floodplain is dominated largely by reed canarygrass and Himalayan blackberry, two non-native plants that take over large sections of natural area and provide little wildlife habitat. The upland, forested sections are dominated by canopy species, such as Douglas-fir and big leaf maple, as well as lesser densities of non-native plants, such as English ivy and bird cherry.
This project will focus on removal of non-native species in both the floodplain and the upland forest. Professional contractors will be on site periodically performing site preparation, planting, and plant maintenance.
