The Sunset Swim Center operates on its usual schedule.
Project Summary & Public Benefits
Funds from the 2008 voter-approved bond were used to make repairs and structural upgrades at the Sunset Swim Center at 13707 NW Science Park Drive (just west of the intersection of Highways 26 and 217).
Work centered on repairing the concrete tunnel surrounding the pool just under the deck. The walls of the tunnel, through which warm air circulates, had slowly deteriorated over the years.
The pool was drained and demolition of the deck began the week of March 30, 2009. All plumbing and electrical fixtures were removed. The tunnel was patched, and exposed rebar and other surfaces were treated to prevent deterioration. A fiberglass membrane shell was then fabricated inside the tunnel to prevent further corrosion. Electrical and plumbing lines were reassembled inside the tunnel, as were all drain lines, skimmer fixtures and lighting fixtures. The deck was then rebuilt and resurfaced with a nonskid epoxy coating.
Other work at the Sunset Swim Center included reinforcing the diving board pedestal and installing hand rails. Gutter tiles were also replaced.
The Center reopened to the public on June 1, 2009, and THPRD celebrated with a grand reopening party on June 13.
Bourke Construction handled the repairs.
