Rock Creek Greenway Restoration Partnership

The seeding and planting phase of this large-scale restoration project is primarily complete.  THPRD continues to work with Clean Water Services to monitor and maintain plantings at this site.  

Project Summary & Public Benefits

Containing the Rock Creek Trail and Pirate Park, the Rock Creek Greenway is one of the most highly used sites within the Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation District (THPRD).  This corridor is also one of the highest value natural area sites and wildlife corridors with Bethany Lake to the west, adjacent forests and farm fields, and Springville Creek running the length of the corridor.  THPRD has partnered with Clean Water Services (CWS) beginning in 2010 to restore large portions of this corridor to improve plant diversity and wildlife habitat.  We will be expanding this partnership to restore areas adjacent to the existing project. 
 
THPRD staff has worked with CWS to identify potential areas for restoration project expansion at nearly 40 total acres, bringing the total project area to nearly 80 acres.  Restoration will focus on invasive plant removal and installation of a diversity of native species.   Target invasive species include Himalayan blackberry, reed canary grass, English ivy, and pasture grasses.  These non-native species crowd out native species and provide little habitat for wildlife.  Site preparation will involve removal of these and other species up to the park district property line.  Once these species are removed, we will be seeding and planting project areas with a variety of native plants that will further improve habitat diversity and water quality in this important greenway and stream corridor.  CWS has a twenty year commitment to maintaining a restoration site, which will help ensure the long term success of this project.
