Community leaders, residents and THPRD staff officially opened Lowami Hart Woods Natural Area with a ribbon cutting ceremony, Camp Fire dedication and cake during a fun-filled celebration on June 14, 2014.

Lowami Hart Woods was renovated with funds from the 2008 voter-approved bond measure. More than a half-mile of both hard- and soft-surface trails wind through the dense forest and along South Johnson Creek. Other improvements include a new parking lot, an entry plaza with an information kiosk, new pedestrian bridges that cross over the creek, and a viewing area along the new ADA loop trail.

A gathering area was built in the middle of the site near the original Campfire flagpole, which remains standing. The area, which is near the creek, is ringed with natural log benches, and will provide a place for nature education classes, story telling and other programming.

Project Summary & Public Benefits

Lowami Hart Woods is a 27.75 acre natural area in the heart of Beaverton. A former Camp Fire Boys and Girls camp, the area is bisected by South Johnson Creek, which separates an upland conifer forest on the east from a mixed conifer-deciduous forest on the west. Parts of the park are located on some steep hillsides; it also hosts a mix of forested uplands and wetland habitats.

THPRD completed an extensive public outreach and master planning process for Lowami Hart Woods in 2001, at which time the THPRD Board of Directors directed preparation of a final draft master plan for the park by staff. Through additional public outreach in 2010-2011, a revised master plan was developed. In October 2011 the THPRD Board of Directors approved the revised master plan.

Funding available through the voter-approved 2008 THPRD Bond Measure made it possible to make site improvements identified in the 2001 and subsequent 2011 master plan.
