Greenway Park / Koll Center Wetland

In June 2013 contractors cleared and treated a reed canarygrass meadow that borders the edge of the Koll outfall channel.  This area was planted with approximately 15,000 native shrubs and trees in early 2015.  These contractors also felled and treated non-native hawthorns and roses in the grasslands immediately west of the Koll pond.  Debris was then piled to provide refuge for wildlife within this habitat, as well as to provide a visual barrier to protect nesting turtles from park users.

In early September 2013 volunteers installed a turtle nesting area in the grasslands west of the Koll pond, constructed and installed four turtle basking platforms and installed the willow dam across the outfall channel for the Koll pond.

Staff and volunteers will be monitoring these sites for wildlife use each year.

Project Summary & Public Benefits

The Natural Resources Department will be proceeding through the public process in order to discuss water level adjustments called for in the maintenance management plan.  They will replant certain areas with shrubs and grasses along with installing basking logs and other turtle habitat enhancements.
