In February 2013 contractors installed 6,750 shrubs and trees throughout the northeastern forested area of the park.Supplemental plantings, weed removal and treatment, and ongoing monitoring has continued to ensure the success of this restoration project.
As part of the restoration work, volunteers have helped with some of the weed removal, mulching of the installed plants, and monitoring of the restoration plantings. For more information about volunteering, please see the Volunteering web page.
Project Summary & Public Benefits
The Natural Resources Department's enhancement of the natural area included removal of invasive weeds and installation of native shrubs and trees.
Problems caused by invasive plants can be quite serious. When allowed to overrun natural areas, they can outcompete native species for food and sunlight. Removal of the invasive species and replacement with native vegetation is expected to improve habitat for local native wildlife.
Project Budget
$30,900
