Project Summary & Public Benefits
Though its wooded area and basketball court had been enjoyed by residents for several years, the 8.3-acre A. M. Kennedy Park in east-central Beaverton had never been developed. But with passage of the $100 million bond in 2008, THPRD was able to work with neighbors and other interested parties to design a neighborhood park with features that voters had identified as priorities. A.M. Kennedy Park reopened to the public in October 2013.
Among the park's new amenities is its centerpiece multi-purpose athletic field, a much-sought after feature that will be used seasonally for a number of sports. Other features include new play equipment, a covered picnic shelter, an ADA-accessible community garden and drinking fountains. The park's existing basketball court remains.
THPRD's Natural Resources staff enhanced the natural area by removing invasive species and planting thousands of native trees and shrubs. The hard-surface trails in and around the natural area have been augmented by gravel paths to provide better access and viewing. Many of the trees cleared from the site remain as decorative logs, while others have been used to construct park benches.
A signature design element is a bridge over Hall Creek, which makes the park accessible from the south via Laurel Street.
