In 2008, when voters in the Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District approved a $100 million bond to maintain facilities, build new trails, restore natural areas, and acquire land for new parks, they set the wheels in motion for dozens of unique projects.
Some are large, such as the redevelopment of community parks, and some are smaller, such as installing new swing sets. But all the projects – no matter the extent of the work -- are important.
One essential project was to upgrade certain areas to ensure that people of all abilities can access the district's offerings. Using standards set by the Americans with Disabilities Act, THPRD made improvements at 12 parks. This was in addition to major ADA upgrades at a number of indoor facilities such as the Aloha Swim Center, the Howard M. Terpenning Recreation Complex, and the Tualatin Hills Aquatics Center.
District managers began work on the ADA upgrades immediately after the bond measure passed. The final project at Waterhouse Park was completed in October 2013.
The parks and the ADA- approved improvements made are as follows:
Barrows Park - picnic table and concrete pad near play area
Bethany Lake Park - trail connection to NW 185th Avenue
Cedar Hills Park - picnic table, concrete pad, and sidewalk extension to the Cedar Hills Recreation Center
Forest Hills Park - 2 percent cross slope pathway adjustment
Jenkins Estate - two picnic tables and concrete pads at Camp Rivendale
Lawndale Park - pathway to playground area
Lost Park - picnic table and concrete pad
Rock Creek Powerline Soccer Fields - parking stall and loading zone near the soccer field, pathway to new portable restroom, picnic table and concrete pad
Skyview Park - picnic table and concrete pad
Waterhouse Park - picnic table and concrete pad, pathway to new play equipment
West Sylvan Park - extended pathway from parking lot to tennis courts
Wonderland Park - picnic table and concrete pad near play area
Project Budget
$150,531 total for the 12 projects
