Park Additions and Upgrades

  • Future Community Center - Land Acquisition
    The 2006 Comprehensive Plan identifies two quadrants within the District that need a Community Center (Recreation/Aquatic) to fulfill the Level-of-Service for this element throughout the District. The two quadrants identified were, the Northwest and Southwest quadrants. The 2008 proposed Bond Measure has set aside funding for land acquisition to purchase a site for the future Southwest Quadrant Community Center.
  • Park Development (New)
    The 2006 Comprehensive Plan identifies areas within the District where new Neighborhood and Community Parks need to be developed to fulfill the desired Level-of-Service for these areas throughout the District. Neighborhood Parks provide important community elements that create social and recreation opportunities, neighborhood identity, and a quality of life component that is integral to the neighborhood. Neighborhood Parks can vary in size from 2-5 acres or more and can have a variety of amenities within them.

    Some of the Neighborhood Park amenities could include:
    New play equipment: toddler, youth age and ADA specific structures; picnic areas; drinking fountain; benches; open grass areas for passive use; outdoor ball courts; sports fields/multipurpose fields; pet areas; sites may include natural features but they do not dominate the site (The types of amenities are dependent upon the size of the site).
    The Bond Measure includes funding to design and develop five new Neighborhood Parks throughout the District:
    • Roger Tilbury Memorial Park, NE
    • AM Kennedy Park, SE
    • Barsotti Park, SW
    • Roy Dancer Park, SW
    • Kaiser Ridge Park, NW
    Community Parks are larger than Neighborhood Parks, usually 10-25 acres in size and can have more or different amenities than a Neighborhood Park.These amenities could include:
    Sport fields; group picnic areas; covered play areas; informal play areas; walking paths; community gardens; skate or BMX facilities; pet areas; on-site parking and permanent restrooms; splash park; and may include natural features, but they do not dominate the site. (The types of amenities are dependent upon the size of the site). Because of the size difference, Community Parks service a larger area and can be more of a destination park depending on the amenities and needs of the park patrons. The Bond Measure includes funding to design and develop one New Community Park in the Southwest Quadrant of the District.
  • Park Land Acquisition
    The 2006 Comprehensive Plan identifies areas within the District where new Neighborhood and Community Parks are needed to meet the desired Level-of-Service for these areas. Neighborhood and Community Parks are very important elements of any community and they improve the quality of life where people live, work and play. New land for Neighborhood Parks is needed in all four quadrants of the District.

    The Bond Measure includes funding for land acquisition to acquire six new Neighborhood Park sites throughout the District, and one Community Park site in the Northeast Quadrant of the District.
  • Park Renovation & Development
    The 2006 Comprehensive Plan and two polling surveys completed as part of the Bond Measure process indicated that taking care of and updating existing facilities is very important to park patrons. Therefore, the Bond Measure includes funding to renovate and redevelop five existing Neighborhood Parks throughout the District. All of the existing sites are older and are in need of improvements and upgrades. Some of the new or improved upgrades to amenities may include:
    Replacement of play equipment: age group or ADA specific; renovation of existing picnic areas and/or shelters; additional passive use grass areas; renovation of outdoor ball courts and/ or sports/multipurpose fields; additional pet areas; natural features but they do not dominate the site (The types of amenities are dependent upon the size of the site).
    The five Neighborhood Parks identified for renovations and redevelopment are:
    • Cedar Mill Park, NE
    • Camille Park, SE
    • Somerset West, NW
    • Pioneer Park, NE
    • Vista Brook Park, SE
    The Bond Measure also includes funding to renovate and redevelop two Community Parks within the District. The two Community Parks identified for renovation and redevelopment are Cedar Hills Park and Schiffler Park. Improved site amenities may include:
    Relocation/replacement of play equipment, ADA specific upgrades, renovation of existing picnic areas and/or shelters, additional or relocated pathways, renovation or additional outdoor sport courts and/ or multipurpose sports fields. (The types of amenities are dependent upon the size of the site).
    In both cases, the existing site features such as vegetation, topography, natural area presence and size will all play a very important role in deciding the extent of renovation and redevelopment.
